The UK government has recently confirmed a significant funding package designed to accelerate walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure across England — creating opportunities for local authorities, communities and partners to deliver more active travel routes and facilities.
In December 2025, Active Travel England (ATE) announced that councils across England have been awarded over £626 million in central government funding to support walking, wheeling and cycling schemes. This multi-year investment is expected to deliver around 500 miles of new and upgraded routes and support an additional 170,000 greener, more active trips per day.
The funding aims to enable safer streets, healthier communities and more sustainable travel choices by backing local authorities with capital funding, technical support and capability development. Local authorities rated more highly for active travel delivery receive proportionally greater funding, helping to unlock high-quality continuous walking and cycling networks.
Alongside this major investment, the government has also launched targeted funding competitions to stimulate innovation in active travel. For example, an Active Travel Innovation Fund invites organisations and businesses to bid for a share of £1 million to deliver projects that get more people walking, wheeling and cycling — with grants of up to £100,000 available per project to help scale bold ideas and community-oriented initiatives.
