The UK Government, in collaboration with Active Travel England (ATE), has recently announced a significant new initiative designed to make walking and cycling more accessible across England. The £291m fund aims to improve infrastructure and provide better facilities for those who choose greener, healthier modes of transport. This funding will primarily be directed towards local councils, providing them with the resources needed to enhance cycling and walking facilities in communities nationwide.
The purpose of the new funding is to assist local authorities to implement measures to create a safer environment for everybody, by reducing vehicular traffic and encouraging the use of cycling and walking as an alternative mode of transport. The longer term aim of the funding is to provide significant health, environmental and congestion benefits to the wider community.
