Case Studies
Falco has recently completed the manufacture, supply and installation of a bespoke cycle hub at Fort William Station, a key transport interchange in the Scottish Highlands. Serving as the terminus for the West Highland Line, with rail connections to Glasgow and Mallaig, the new facility strengthens active travel infrastructure in one of Scotland’s most scenic and environmentally significant regions.
Commissioned by ScotRail and delivered as part of the Scottish Government’s 2023 UCI Legacy Cycling Investment Programme, the cycle hub is designed to encourage greener journeys and reduce reliance on private cars. Measuring 10m x 4m and based on the robust FalcoHub design, the new facility accommodates up to 38 bikes using FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle racks — offering safe, accessible, and space-efficient cycle parking for commuters and tourists alike.
Clad in reinforced safety glass, the structure balances modern design with durability and transparency. As a unique visual feature, the glass panels have been enhanced with bespoke graphics designed by local primary school students — adding a creative and community-driven element that reflects the area’s character and pride.
The cycle hub has been made complete for cyclists of all abilities thanks to adaptive cycle parking, a FalcoFix 2.0 cycle repair stand – allowing cyclists to carry out basic cycle maintenance whilst on the go and energy saving LED lighting.
The image was captured on a sun-soaked July day during a Highland heatwave, the cycle hub stands as a gleaming example of functional infrastructure with local heart.
The project aligns closely with ScotRail’s cycling strategy and its commitment to sustainability, offering high-quality facilities that support Scotland’s wider goal of becoming a greener and healthier nation. Falco’s in-house design team worked closely to ensure the structure met the client’s exacting specifications, including the provision of structural calculations in accordance with EN 1090 CPR requirements — ensuring full compliance with UK construction standards.
In addition to the Fort William installation shown here, Falco is working closely with ScotRail to roll out similar cycle parking facilities at stations across the ScotRail network, stations include Glasgow Queen Street, Gourock, Elgin and Perth stations. This major investment in cycle parking infrastructure is expected to have a significant impact on modal shift, with more passengers opting for a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly travel option.
Patrick Harvie MSP, Minister for Active Travel, announced a £2million cycling legacy fund to promote and enhance cycling infrastructure and services across Scotland’s Railway. As part of the legacy fund, a bespoke secure cycle hub will be installed at both Inverness and Fort William stations.
Falco has been a family company with its own production site for over 70 years. Sustainability was in our DNA from the very beginning and this is reflected within our complete range of modular cycle parking and shelter products, all designed with full circularity in mind.
All products ranges are contemporary and durable, typical of a Falco product. Falco has been at the forefront of the cycle parking and street furniture market and has built up a renowned reputation for manufacturing products that exceed in both design and durability.
Falco’s operations have supported the Circular Economy for many years, simply manufacturing products with environmentally friendly products, that can last for decades and at the end of the product life can be 100% recycled and manufactured back into a brand new product.
