Case Studies
Falco continues with the roll out of the next tranche of cycle parking facilities across ScotRail's franchised network of over 300 stations across Scotland. Pictured here are six of the latest installations at Cupar, Elgin, Larkhall, Dunkeld & Birnam, Leuchars, Rosyth and Glenrothes with Thornton Stations. The scheme, which got underway last winter, involves the surveying of stations, proposing solutions and the manufacture, supply and installation of cycle parking systems to help implement ScotRail’s cycling strategy. In order to create a network-wide brand feel to encourage more people to cycle to stations ScotRail’s strategy is to install standard facilities throughout the network so that cyclists know exactly what to expect regardless of which station they use. The user experience will be enhanced further by Falco installing multiple way finding signs at every station so that the cyclist will be well informed to where they can use the facilities. Two key products of the programme is the innovative FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle rack and the spacious FalcoRail cycle canopy. The latest two-tier rack offers superior practicality compared to other cheaper models and is exceptionally user-friendly, quieter in operation and offers enhanced security. The FalcoRail cycle canopy was purposely designed to compliment the two-tier system and offers maximum coverage whilst promoting a open spacious and lightweight design and additional snow loading to cope with harsh Scottish Winters! Falco has already carried out the design, manufacture, supply and installation of secure cycle parking facilities for a wide number of stations including Conon Bridge, Muir of Ord, Keith and Insch, Huntly, Nairn, Larkhall, Lenzie and Gourock stations, with further stations to receive secure cycle parking this summer. Upcoming stations include bespoke cycle hubs for Inverness and Fort William Stations, as well as secure cycle parking for Glasgow Queen Street, Barrhead, Pitlochry, Ladybank and Kirkhill stations. Patrick Harvie MSP, Minister for Active Travel, announced a £2million cycling legacy fund to promote and enhance cycling infrastructure and services across Scotland’s Railway. These are the latest secure bike hangars manufactured, supplied and installed by Falco for Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Spanning twelve sites for the Trust, Falco installed six Green Hangers and six Grey Hangers at sites including Slade House in Oxford, Marlborough House in Swinson and Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury. The bike hangars were commissioned exclusively for NHS staff, with all twelve new lockers providing staff with up to 72 cycle parking spaces, all within a sheltered lockable unit with secure access. The design of each bike hangar includes the trusts own logo, vibrant cycling graphics, instructional signage and powder coating in an attractive ‘White Aluminium or Moss Green’ RAL colour for additional durability. Each bike hangar takes up no more room than a single car parking space and is capable of accommodating all types of cycles - from road and mountain bikes to bikes with a child seat on the back or storage basket on the front. Falco design is both evolutionary and innovative by nature and the new FalcoPod is no exception. This is the third generation of ‘bike hangar’ type product building on the pedigree of the original street locker the ‘Midi Bike Box’ with some great new features over existing products as follows: Size - fits in half a car parking space and houses 6 bikes, with covered weather protection. Family inclusive – with an ergonomically improved design, the additional space/height (55% more) means there is no need to remove child seats or baskets from the back or front of bikes. Bike security - the six place FalcoSound bike rack has three locking points including the ability to use a ‘D’ lock through the rear wheel and frame. Easy access - single door with integral lock and gas strut for assisted lifting. The FalcoPod bike hangar as shown here for Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, is a simple and effective cycle parking facility designed to meet the needs of cyclists who don’t have access to private cycle parking facilities. Operating like a giant bread bin, each hangar is a secure and lockable unit capable of accommodating up to six bikes each. The innovative cycle parking solution is also available with an App enabled smart lock, enabling residents to access the unit with their smartphone, eliminating the needs for physical keys and fobs. Robust cycle parking was at the forefront of the initial design stage of the flagship development, aiming to provide up to 1,300 residents with a sustainable, cost-effective mode of transport. The City of Edinburgh Council project aims to help more people choose cycling as an affordable and sustainable way of travel for everyday journeys and has been developed in partnership with the nation’s cycling charity, Cycling Scotland and supported by Transport Scotland grant funding. Falco has completed the roll-out of the UK’s first ever series of smart bike hangars for Brighton & Hove City Council. The scheme which got underway towards the end of 2022, involved the manufacture, supply and installation of smart bike hangars with mobile app access, to provide the seaside resort with a total fleet of 150 bike hangars, equalling 900 secure on-street cycle parking spaces. For users without a smartphone, a physical key can be supplied instead. As well as manufacture and installation, Falco is also providing a fully managed service with both app and key rental management for the residents and bike hangar maintenance on behalf of the Brighton & Hove City Council Highways and Infrastructure team. The bike hangars have been extremely popular since installation began in the summer of 2022. More than 95% of spaces have been allocated to residents and over 2000 people are on a waiting list.
