This April, Falco manufactured, supplied and installed a new cycle parking scheme at Barnsley Interchange, the main transport hub serving the centre of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Commissioned by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, the project is part of a broader initiative to promote active travel and enhance sustainable transport infrastructure across the borough. As part of the installation, Falco supplied and installed 42 two-tier cycle parking spaces using the innovative FalcoLevel-Premium+ cycle parking system, along with three Sheffield stands to provide six additional spaces designed specifically for non-standard or cargo bikes. The FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier rack is engineered for maximum space efficiency and user-friendliness, making it an ideal solution for high-traffic areas such as transport interchanges, where both capacity and convenience are essential. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Sheffield stands ensures the facility caters to a diverse range of cyclists, supporting inclusivity for those using larger or adapted bikes. The completed installation has significantly enhanced the cycle parking capacity at Barnsley Interchange, offering secure and easy-to-use facilities for commuters and visitors alike. By delivering a durable, low-maintenance solution tailored to the demands of a busy public environment, Falco supported the Council towards another important step of encouraging greener travel choices and reducing reliance on private car use. As with thousands of cycle parking schemes installed by Falco across the UK, the scheme here at Barnsley Interchange makes use of the tried and tested FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle parking system, designed to accommodate twice as many cycles within the same space restraints or any traditional cycle rack or stand. Moving forwards, the two-tier cycle racks are designed to be maintenance free to provide minimal cost of ownership to the Council. Additionally, should there be any unforeseen damage, the modular nature of each structure means that replacing any damaged items is simple and easy to undertake. Falco’s cycle hub at Inverness Station has been officially unveiled by ScotRail, providing enhanced cycle parking and facilities for cyclists visiting the north east station. The new cycle hub, manufactured, supplied and installed by Falco, is delivered as part of the Scottish Government’s 2023 UCI Legacy Cycling Investment Programme, which includes 100 additional cycle spaces, along with a cycle maintenance stand to assist riders with basic repairs. The new cycle hub is a key component of ScotRail's cycling strategy and its commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. By providing high-quality cycle parking facilities, ScotRail aims to encourage more people to cycle to stations, reducing reliance on cars and supporting the Scottish Government's vision for a greener, healthier Scotland. Based on the flagship FalcoLok design, the 13m x 6m glass clad cycle hub is coupled with the FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle parking system, a FalcoFix 2.0 cycle repair station, LED lighting, a secure access system, adaptive cycle parking and wayfinding signage. Falco also supplied the provision of a concrete base. The cycle hub was developed by Falco’s in house design team to ensure it met the client’s specification including structural calculations to meet the EN 1090 CPR requirements of UK law. In addition to the Inverness installation shown here, Falco is working closely with ScotRail to roll out similar cycle parking facilities at stations across the ScotRail network, stations include Glasgow Queen Street, Fort William, Gourock, Elgin and Perth stations. This major investment in cycle parking infrastructure is expected to have a significant impact on modal shift, with more passengers opting for a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly travel option. Patrick Harvie MSP, Minister for Active Travel, announced a £2million cycling legacy fund to promote and enhance cycling infrastructure and services across Scotland’s Railway. As part of the legacy fund, a bespoke secure cycle hub will be installed at both Inverness and Fort William stations. In a continued commitment to sustainable transport and accessible cycling facilities, the University of Glasgow has expanded its state-of-the-art cycle parking infrastructure with the recent installation of FalcoPod bike hangars at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute. This latest installation at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute, situated in a modern research building on the north-western edge of Glasgow, represents the university's ongoing effort to foster a greener, healthier campus while supporting its community's commitment to active travel. The University of Glasgow initially introduced the FalcoPod bike hangars to its Gilmorehill Campus back in September 2023, installing nine units to meet the growing demand for secure cycle parking. Recognising the success of the initial installation, the University expanded the initiative in November 2024 with the addition of further bike hangars at its Environmental Research Centre. The most recent addition of FalcoPod bike hangars at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute reflects both the University’s commitment to sustainability and its close ties with key research groups in basic and clinical cancer research. Designed with an advanced smartphone enabled locking mechanism, these bike hangars enhance security and convenience for cyclists, reducing the need to carry additional keys, fobs or swipe cards. With a simple tap of the FalcoSmart app, cyclists can unlock their bike hangar to reveal a secure cycle parking space. Powder-coated in RAL 6009 Fir Green, the cycle hangars offer a modern aesthetic that blends seamlessly into the campus’ green surroundings. Each cycle hangar is equipped with the University’s own logo and instructional signage, as well as a QR code for easy registration. Cyclists can also identify each unit by its unique identification number provided on the front of each unit. Despite their compact design—taking up no more space than a single car parking space—each FalcoPod is spacious enough to accommodate a variety of bikes, from road and mountain bikes to those with child seats or storage baskets, offering maximum flexibility for cyclists. By integrating advanced technology and innovative design, the FalcoPod bike hangars also contribute to the Institute's modern, research-driven environment. The system allows for ease of use, ensuring that even those new to cycling or those with busy schedules can rely on a hassle-free, secure, cycle parking solution. Falco design is both evolutionary and innovative by nature and the new FalcoPod is no exception. This is the third generation of ‘bike hangar’ type product building on the pedigree of the original street locker the ‘Midi Bike Box’ with some great new features over existing products as follows: Size - fits in half a car parking space and houses 6 bikes, with covered weather protection. Family inclusive – with an ergonomically improved design, the additional space/height (55% more) means there is no need to remove child seats or baskets from the back or front of bikes. Bike security - the six place FalcoSound bike rack has three locking points including the ability to use a ‘D’ lock through the rear wheel and frame. Easy access - single door with integral lock and gas strut for assisted lifting. The effective bike hangar has already been successfully rolled out to the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Brent, Camden, Westminster and Merton Councils. The London Borough of Ealing is the latest local authority to receive a network of the UK’s most user-friendly bike hangar design - the FalcoPod. Falco is delighted to be working with the West London Council to roll-out their next phase of residential bike hangars, providing convenient on-street cycle parking for resident use. The London Borough of Ealing identified a significant demand for secure, reliable bike storage within the borough. Many residents do not have access to private bike storage, and this lack of secure parking has often deterred people from cycling, especially in urban areas where bike theft is a common concern. To support the uptake of cycling and improve overall sustainability, the borough decided to invest in a public bike hangar scheme to provide residents with a secure, affordable option for storing their bikes. Located at key residential areas across the Borough, Falco manufactured and installed a series of 46 FalcoPod bike hangars this month, providing six on-street cycle parking spaces per bike hangar, whilst only utilising one car parking space. Each bike hangar is powder-coated in RAL 6009 Fir Green, a colour that blends seamlessly with the local environment and enhances the visual appeal of the urban landscape. The hangars feature secure locking systems, providing peace of mind to residents and making them ideal for long-term use in public spaces. As well as manufacture and installation, Falco is also providing a fully managed service with both key Rental Management for the residents and bike hangar Maintenance on behalf of the London Borough of Ealing Highways and Infrastructure team. The Falco Rentals website enables Ealing residents to look for free spaces in the FalcoPod Bike Hangar network, book an available space and pay online, all in one place. The Falco Rentals website also provides a useful video along with other ideas and tips on safely looking after a bike. In addition to the Bike Hangars for Ealing Council, Falco is also providing managed Bike Hangar services for the London Borough of Camden, Merton, Lewisham and Richmond and Wandsworth, as well as Bath & North East Somerset Council and Sheffield City Council.
