Case Studies
The University of Edinburgh is the first UK University to install the advanced VelowUp® vertical cycle stands at its MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine department. The Institute, specialising in human molecular genetics and biology research, received a series of 63 of the advanced cycle parking systems enabling visitors and staff members to securely park a bike within the restricted space. The advanced VelowUp® vertical cycle stand was chosen to utilise the limited space available and provide a maximum number of cycle parking spaces which no other cycle rack was able to provide. In addition to the University of Edinburgh, Falco has recently installed another series of 15 VelowUp cycle stands for Valentines Park in the London Borough of Redbridge, allowing visitors of all ages to securely park a bike. VelowUp® Vertical Cycle RackThe VelowUp® is purposely designed to maximise the amount of cycle parking spaces in areas where space is at a premium. The system is designed to save up to 40% more space compared to any other conventional cycle rack or stand. The VelowUp® is easy to install, simple to operate and securely accommodates all types of bicycles. The VelowUp® product video shows this simple but effective cycle parking system in use. Falco has installed the UK’s first VeloView Cycle Monitoring and Detection System from Abel Sensors at LBWF’s Walthamstow Central station! Incorporating intelligent technology, the system enables real time remote bike monitoring of cycle parking facilities for both cyclists and managers. With 90% market share in the Netherlands and a contract with ProRail to provide bike detection at all Dutch railway stations, Abel Sensors are the world leaders in cycle monitoring and detection. Abel Sensors installations include the prestigious Utrecht and Haarlem cycle parks with over 30,000 bikes being detected in real time. Bicycle detection and monitoring systems are designed to do a number of things for both cyclists and cycle hub managers: Assist traffic planners to determine appropriate infrastructure requirements. Enable cycle park managers to monitor the usage of their facilities (occupancy, flow rates and abandoned/long parked bikes). Provide cyclists with information on the availability of free spaces. Provide cyclists with directional signage to local facilities. Each cycle parking facility is different and there is a myriad of cycle parking rack designs and Falco has a number of different bike detection technologies to address each individual situation, including: Optical Sensors Contact sensors RFID Detectors Essentially bike detection and monitoring systems measure the usage of bikes within a cycle park and make this information available for either; a) Analytical purposes e.g. usage % figures over a specific time frame, reducing the numbers of abandoned cycles, planning the capacity of cycle facilities b) Informational purposes e.g. to provide such things as signage to direct users in a certain way or modify behaviour, directional signposting for cyclists, managing the flow of bikes from different entrances, enabling charging systems to be introduced, integration of bike parking information into client apps. These are the new FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle racks recently manufactured, supplied and installed for the largest cycle park in Scotland at the new £45m Bayes Centre for data and technology excellence at the University of Edinburgh! The new £45 million Bayes Centre at the University of Edinburgh was officially opened by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, on the 23rd October. Part of the development included a 382 space underground cycle park that also featured showers and changing facilities for cyclists. The university wanted to make the most of the space available and worked closely with Falco to agree upon a design that would allow for the most numbers of spaces within the space restraints of the underground facility. A layout of 362 spaces utilising the UK’s leading two-tier cycle rack, the FalcoLevel-Premium+, was agreed upon to provide double the amount of spaces compared to any traditional series of Sheffield Stands or cycle racks. Falco provided the client with free site surveys, free CAD design as well as full manufacture, supply and installation of the cycle hub. In addition to the cycle park shown here, Falco had previously worked with the university at another site and had provided the FalcoLevel Premium+ as a solution for both enhancing cycle spaces and increasing durability. Falco is delighted to be working in partnership with the University and will be installing 63 VelowUp! Cycle racks at another campus early next month!
