Selfridges Department Stores recently appointed Falco as the provider of secure high density cycle racks for employee use at two of its flagship stores. The second largest shop in the UK, Selfridges Oxford Street and its iconic landmark Bull Ring store in Birmingham, were chosen to receive new compact cycle parking facilities for employees to travel to and from work. Falco manufactured, supplied and installed 72 spaces of the FalcoLevel-Eco Two-Tier cycle rack with 20 spaces of FalcoVert-Pro semi-vertical cycle rack for Level 1 of the car park at Oxford Street and 11 spaces of the innovative VelowUp® vertical cycle rack at its midlands branch, as part of measures to support the increase in cycling at its Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham. All of the innovative cycle parking products were an ideal cycle parking solution for the tight constraints of the space envelopes available, providing a maximum number of cycle parking spaces compared to other traditional forms of cycle parking such as Sheffield Stands and A-11 racks. The recent installation shown here at Selfridges is just one of many retail environments Falco has supplied and installed cycle parking equipment for. This is the new eye-catching cycle hub recently designed, manufactured, supplied and installed by Falco for Newham University NHS Hospital in Plaistow, East London. Commissioned by the hospital for staff use, the cycle hub is positioned in a prominent location opposite the Emergency Department entrance and puts cycling at the forefront of transport innovation at the hospital. The 16m cycle hub, powder coated in an attractive NHS blue, is based on Falco’s best-selling FalcoLok design. The cycle hub has been fitted with an automatic door, 50 spaces of FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking, twelve Sheffield Stands for cargo and adaptive bikes, low power LED lighting and finished off with some eye catching branding graphics. The two-tier cycle racks are housed in a bespoke contemporary design of the classic Falco Cycle Hub shelter, which features clean lines through the glass cladding supported by stainless steel glass clamps. The whole shelter is hot dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and then polyester powder coated in RAL 5012 Light Blue. Rainwater is collected via innovative integral gutters as part of the roof system and a bespoke bund ensure that the cycle hub is weather proof. Falco has completed the roll-out of the latest tranche of cycle parking facilities across a number of Abellio West Midland’s franchised network of over 146 stations across the West Midlands. Pictured here are several of the latest installations at; Wellington, Stone, Stourbridge Junction, Dudley Port, Redditch, Watford Junction and Sutton Coldfield Stations! The scheme which got underway in July last year involved the manufacture, supply and installation of a number of cycle parking facilities with associated canopies, along with the provision of cycle repair and maintenance stations to allow commuters to carry out cycle maintenance whilst on the go. Two key products of this tranche of the Abellio West Midland’s Cycle Innovation Plan included the open and spacious FalcoRail cycle canopy and a modified version of the FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle rack providing mass, sheltered and secure cycle parking across the network. To date, Falco has supplied Abellio West Midland’s Trains with over 1,000 secure cycle parking spaces at the following stations: The Department for Transport (DfT) awarded the train operator funding through their Cycle Rail programme last year with the aim of encouraging people to consider how they can reduce their carbon footprint and to promote healthier, more sustainable travel choices such as cycling, when travelling by train. It is hoped that by improving the facilities available at stations, cycling can be made an easier and more convenient alternative for commuters and leisure travellers alike. Falco is delighted to be working with the team at the London Borough of Brent to roll-out their next phase of residential bike hangars. The FalcoPods were installed this Summer and residents are now enjoying access to the latest on-street bike hangars. Additionally Falco is providing a fully managed service to Brent with both key Rental Management to the residents and bike hangar Maintenance on behalf of the Brent Highways and Infrastructure team. The Falco Rentals website enables residents to look for free spaces in the FalcoPod Bike Hangar network, book an available space and pay all in one place. The Borough is subsidising the first year’s rental to make the facilities more accessible to residents and we have produced a video to help them use the new facilities:  Family Friendly Bike Hangar The FalcoPod bike hangar is a robust on-street cycle parking solution designed to meet the needs of cyclists who don’t have access to private cycle parking facilities. The improved innovative shape means that you no longer have to remove some baskets or child seats when storing your bike! We recognised that the current stock of bike hangar products really only suited a standard bike silhouette and in order to facilitate other cyclists then we needed a product that addressed those barriers to cycling that many other groups faced. So our brief looked at a number of sectors where we felt we could make a big difference from just small changes and the first of these was from our work with Local Authorities and the residential sector. Here family inclusivity was a key issue so we needed a solution where child seats (front or back) as well as panniers or cargo racks could be accommodated without having to be removed/re-fitted for each journey (whilst holding a baby!). As a result, the FalcoPod has 55% more space than some current designs whilst still fitting in the same bike hangar footprint and this additional room is predominantly where child seats and baskets are fitted. Falco design is both evolutionary and innovative by nature and the new FalcoPod is no exception. This is the third generation of ‘bike hangar’ type product building on the pedigree of the original street locker the ‘Midi Bike Box’ with some great new features over existing products as follows: Size - fits in half a car parking space and houses 6 bikes, with covered weather protection. Family inclusive – with an ergonomically improved design, the additional space/height (55% more) means there is no need to remove child seats or baskets from the back or front of bikes. Bike security - the six place FalcoSound bike rack has three locking points including the ability to use a ‘D’ lock through the rear wheel and frame. These are the upgraded TfL standard Sheffield cycle stands, Falco recently manufactured, supplied and installed for a number of London Underground Stations within the London Borough of Brent last month! Falco’s installation team which has the UK requirement of NRSWA ‘Street Works’ certification for work on the public highway, undertook the project to increase cycle parking capacity in the Borough by 126 spaces. Taking the traditional Sheffield stand a step further, the enhanced TfL stand has an integral tapping rail to provide for people with impaired vision as well as improved stability and branding options for the Council plus a superior user experience for the cyclist. Falco installed 63 of the powder coated Sheffield Stands to four stations within zone 2 and 3 on the London Underground network, at Willesden Station, Kensal Green Station, Kilburn Park Station and Stonebridge Station. Each below ground fix cycle stand is coated in a Jet Black RAL colour to improve durability with distinctive cycle parking branded vinyl stickers. London Borough of Brent received the following cycle stand allocation to each station: Willesden Station: 26 Stands Kensal Green Station:  6 Stands Kilburn Station: 13 Stands Stonebridge Station: 18 Stands Falco provided complete design, manufacture, supply and installation to the London Borough of Brent, coupled with a free site survey and free rendering graphics to help visualise the scheme.
