Cylindrical Cycle Shelter
26-11-2021
Falco Designs Striking Cylindrical Cycle Shelter and Bespoke Seating for De Vaart Elementary School in Ter Aar, Netherlands

This is the striking cylindrical cycle shelter Falco designed, manufactured, supplied and installed for De Vaart Elementary School in Ter Aar, Netherlands. Combining creativity with practicality, the new eye-catching cycle shelter sits conspicuous within the school grounds and provides secure levels of cycle parking for students and staff. The bespoke cycle shelter is based on the traditional FalcoLok design and boasts a generous 6m diamater with associated curved doors, secure access, a green sedum roof and bespoke FalcoSinus seating surrounding the perimeter.   Designed by Falco’s in-house design team, the unique cycle shelter is manufactured from a combination of hot-dip galvanised steel with FSC® certified hardwood slats. Installed by Falco last month, the cycle shelter and seating has been designed in such a way to maximise the facilities available to students, yet within the tight constraits of space available. The green sedum roof, an increasingly popular feature for Falco shelters, supports the schools sustainable development plan by providing the many advantages associated with green roof systems as well as insulation for both heat and noise. A sedum roof both reduces water discharge as well as compensating for CO2 emissions. A further benefit of green roof systems is that they traditionally last longer than a usual roof covering and offer a natural view for students from the upper floors. The FalcoSinus seating as shown here, is a contemporary bench design ideal for a wide number of applications. The design is available in various radii and angles allowing a number of configuration possibilities. The FalcoSinus can contour a specific line to follow or highlight a natural or man-made curve. Basildon’s new cycle parking facility is located to the left of the main entrance, adjacent to the multi storey car park and Southend’s new facility is located opposite car park E, next to the main entrance. In addition to this scheme shown here at Basildon University Hospital, Falco also manufactured, supplied and installed the same facility for sister hospital Southend University NHS Hospital. The scheme here at Basildon University Hospital makes use of the tried and tested FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking system and the Falco Rail cycle canopy, which when combined together, create the ultimate cycle park - providing cyclists to the hospital with high levels of cycle security, all in a spacious contemporary canopy design. Basildon and Sothend University Hospital are only two of many NHS hospitals Falco provided cycle parking infrastructure to this year. Rotterdam Water Taxi Passenger Waiting Shelter for Piet Smitkade Road in Rotterdam

This is the flagship 40m long water taxi waiting shelter, Falco designed, manufactured, supplied and installed on Piet Smitkade Road, near the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam last month! With an unobstructed view over the Nieuwe Maas river, the new passenger waiting shelter, provides complete wind and rain coverage whilst passengers wait for a water bus or water taxi to travel to 50 different docks within Rotterdam and Schiedam. The council’s aim by offering this unique transport facility is to discourage car use and provide a more sustainable and quicker mode of transport, particularly during the hundreds of events per year held at the Feyenoord stadium where up to 69k spectators can attend. The new passenger waiting shelter is based upon the FalcoLok series of secure stores and features LED lighting and a green sedum roof. The extensive 40m x 5m shelter provides ample space and is cladded in heat-soaked reinforced safety glass providing a maximum flow of light. The roof of the structure has been designed to accommodate green living sedum. An increasingly popular feature for Falco shelters, which supports the docks sustainable development plan by providing the many advantages associated with green roof systems as well as insulation for both heat and noise. A sedum roof both reduces water discharge as well as compensating for CO2 emissions. A further benefit of green roof systems is that they traditionally last longer than a usual roof covering and offer a natural view for residents of each apartment. In addition to the project as shown here at Piet Smitkade Road, the FalcoHub design has also been used across several other cycle parking schemes this year including Leicester City Council’s Leycroft Road depot, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School in Dundee, the first cycle hub in the UK to feature an app-based locking system for Bedford Town Council, a bespoke version for Salford Royal NHS and The Royal Oldham Hospital NHS and a flagship 16m bespoke version for Newham University NHS Hospital. The FalcoLok is a contemporary cycle store manufactured from a combination of a galvanised steel frame and steel mesh, designed to be robust and long lasting. The cycle hub was developed by Falco’s in house design team to ensure it met the client’s specification including structural calculations so that the whole design meets the UK/European CPR regulations EN1090 and is CE marked as per UK law.
