Case Studies
Falco’s cycle hub at Inverness Station has been officially unveiled by ScotRail, providing enhanced cycle parking and facilities for cyclists visiting the north east station. The new cycle hub, manufactured, supplied and installed by Falco, is delivered as part of the Scottish Government’s 2023 UCI Legacy Cycling Investment Programme, which includes 100 additional cycle spaces, along with a cycle maintenance stand to assist riders with basic repairs. The new cycle hub is a key component of ScotRail's cycling strategy and its commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. By providing high-quality cycle parking facilities, ScotRail aims to encourage more people to cycle to stations, reducing reliance on cars and supporting the Scottish Government's vision for a greener, healthier Scotland. Based on the flagship FalcoLok design, the 13m x 6m glass clad cycle hub is coupled with the FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle parking system, a FalcoFix 2.0 cycle repair station, LED lighting, a secure access system, adaptive cycle parking and wayfinding signage. Falco also supplied the provision of a concrete base. The cycle hub was developed by Falco’s in house design team to ensure it met the client’s specification including structural calculations to meet the EN 1090 CPR requirements of UK law. In addition to the Inverness installation shown here, Falco is working closely with ScotRail to roll out similar cycle parking facilities at stations across the ScotRail network, stations include Glasgow Queen Street, Fort William, Gourock, Elgin and Perth stations. This major investment in cycle parking infrastructure is expected to have a significant impact on modal shift, with more passengers opting for a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly travel option. Patrick Harvie MSP, Minister for Active Travel, announced a £2million cycling legacy fund to promote and enhance cycling infrastructure and services across Scotland’s Railway. As part of the legacy fund, a bespoke secure cycle hub will be installed at both Inverness and Fort William stations. In a continued commitment to sustainable transport and accessible cycling facilities, the University of Glasgow has expanded its state-of-the-art cycle parking infrastructure with the recent installation of FalcoPod bike hangars at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute. This latest installation at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute, situated in a modern research building on the north-western edge of Glasgow, represents the university's ongoing effort to foster a greener, healthier campus while supporting its community's commitment to active travel. The University of Glasgow initially introduced the FalcoPod bike hangars to its Gilmorehill Campus back in September 2023, installing nine units to meet the growing demand for secure cycle parking. Recognising the success of the initial installation, the University expanded the initiative in November 2024 with the addition of further bike hangars at its Environmental Research Centre. The most recent addition of FalcoPod bike hangars at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute reflects both the University’s commitment to sustainability and its close ties with key research groups in basic and clinical cancer research. Designed with an advanced smartphone enabled locking mechanism, these bike hangars enhance security and convenience for cyclists, reducing the need to carry additional keys, fobs or swipe cards. With a simple tap of the FalcoSmart app, cyclists can unlock their bike hangar to reveal a secure cycle parking space. Powder-coated in RAL 6009 Fir Green, the cycle hangars offer a modern aesthetic that blends seamlessly into the campus’ green surroundings. Each cycle hangar is equipped with the University’s own logo and instructional signage, as well as a QR code for easy registration. Cyclists can also identify each unit by its unique identification number provided on the front of each unit. Despite their compact design—taking up no more space than a single car parking space—each FalcoPod is spacious enough to accommodate a variety of bikes, from road and mountain bikes to those with child seats or storage baskets, offering maximum flexibility for cyclists. By integrating advanced technology and innovative design, the FalcoPod bike hangars also contribute to the Institute's modern, research-driven environment. The system allows for ease of use, ensuring that even those new to cycling or those with busy schedules can rely on a hassle-free, secure, cycle parking solution. Falco design is both evolutionary and innovative by nature and the new FalcoPod is no exception. This is the third generation of ‘bike hangar’ type product building on the pedigree of the original street locker the ‘Midi Bike Box’ with some great new features over existing products as follows: Size - fits in half a car parking space and houses 6 bikes, with covered weather protection. Family inclusive – with an ergonomically improved design, the additional space/height (55% more) means there is no need to remove child seats or baskets from the back or front of bikes. Bike security - the six place FalcoSound bike rack has three locking points including the ability to use a ‘D’ lock through the rear wheel and frame. Easy access - single door with integral lock and gas strut for assisted lifting. The effective bike hangar has already been successfully rolled out to the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Brent, Camden, Westminster and Merton Councils. Following the successful installation and operation of Falco's innovative smart FalcoPod cycle hangars at the University of Glasgow's Gilmorehill Campus, Falco has now expanded its partnership with the University of Glasgow by installing a new fleet of cycle hangars at the university's Environmental Research Centre. Back in September last year, Falco manufactured and installed a series of nine smart FalcoPod Bike Hangars, creating a new network of secure cycle parking infrastructure across the Universities West End campus. Following the success of the first tranche, the university commissioned a fleet of cycle hangars for its Environmental Research Centre – broadening the accessibility of secure, smart access, cycle storage across the Universities campuses. The new cycle hangars, are equipped with Falco's cutting-edge smartphone technology, allowing students and staff to access each cycle hangar with the users smartphone, completely eliminating the need for keys, fobs or swipe cards. The design of each bike hangar includes the Universities own logo, instructional signage, a QR code for easy registration and powder coating in an attractive ‘Fir Green’ RAL colour for additional durability. Each state-of-the-art bike hangar provides University cyclists with quick and easy accessibility via the users smartphone. The user simply downloads the app, registers for a space, is granted accessibility via the back office and then can access their chosen hangar within seconds. For users without a smartphone, a physical key can be supplied instead. The FalcoPod bike hangar, as shown here at The University of Glasgow, is a robust on-street cycle parking solution designed to meet the needs of cyclists who don’t have access to private cycle parking facilities. The improved innovative shape means that users no longer have to remove some baskets or child seats when storing their bike! Falco design is both evolutionary and innovative by nature and the new FalcoPod is no exception. This month, Falco completed the design, manufacture, supply and installation of 20m of FalcoZan-180 cycle shelter, complete with 98 secure cycle parking spaces, split across two units at Renfrew’s key strategic industrial, distribution and logistics park. Unit 1 took delivery of an 8m FalcoZan-180 cycle shelter, complete with 36 spaces of secure FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle rack and Unit 2 received a 12m FalcoZan-180 cycle shelter, with 56 spaces of FalcoLevel-Eco and six spaces using traditional Sheffield stands. The two-tier cycle racks offer employees and visitors with a space-efficient parking solution, allowing cyclists to securely store their bikes in a compact, vertically stacked arrangement. The scheme here at Westway, makes use of the tried and tested FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking system and the popular FalcoZan-180 cycle shelter, which when combined together, create an attractive cycle park - providing cyclists to the park with high levels of cycle security, all in a spacious contemporary shelter design. The green sedum roof, an increasingly popular feature for Falco shelters, supports the parks sustainable development plan by providing the many advantages associated with green roof systems as well as insulation for both heat and noise. A sedum roof both reduces water discharge as well as compensating for CO2 emissions. A further benefit of green roof systems is that they traditionally last longer than a usual roof covering and offer a natural view for employees and visitors to the nearby units. The installation of this comprehensive cycling infrastructure at Westway is a testament to the park's commitment to sustainability and its recognition of the growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options. The FalcoLevel-Eco is a high density and budget friendly two-tier cycle parking system which accommodates twice the number of bicycles compared to any other traditional cycle rack or stand. The FalcoLevel two-tier series is the UK’s best-selling high density cycle rack and is used at the UK’s first ever cycle hub at Leeds City Station as well as the UK’s two largest cycle hubs at Cambridge and Chelmsford Stations. For more information about the scheme here at Westway Park, or how Falco can assist your cycle parking project, please contact our helpful sales team at sales@falco.co.uk.

Falco continues with the roll out of the next tranche of cycle parking facilities across ScotRail's franchised network of over 300 stations across Scotland. Pictured here is the latest two-tier cycle parking installation at Glasgow’s Queen Street Station. Falco manufactured, supplied and installed 54 spaces of the FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle parking system, along with two FalcoFix 2.0 cycle repair stations and the design and construction of a DDA cycle ramp, enabling cyclists with all abilities to use the new cycle parking facility with ease. The scheme, which got underway last winter, involves the surveying of stations, proposing solutions and the manufacture, supply and installation of cycle parking systems to help implement ScotRail’s cycling strategy. In order to create a network-wide brand feel to encourage more people to cycle to stations ScotRail’s strategy is to install standard facilities throughout the network so that cyclists know exactly what to expect regardless of which station they use. The user experience will be enhanced further by Falco installing multiple way finding signs at every station so that the cyclist will be well informed to where they can use the facilities. Falco has already carried out the design, manufacture, supply and installation of secure cycle parking facilities for a wide number of stations including Conon Bridge, Muir of Ord, Keith and Insch, Huntly, Nairn, Larkhall, Lenzie and Gourock stations, with further stations to receive secure cycle parking this summer. Upcoming stations include bespoke cycle hubs for Inverness and Fort William Stations, as well as secure cycle parking for Barrhead, Ladybank and Kirkhill stations.
